Last night was a soiree to celebrate the launch of the new collaboration between Incase and the Andy Warhol foundation. The setup was awesome. The takeaway were these Incase iPhone 4 cases. I actually grabbed one for Reagan and one for a giveaway. But I realized later that she has a different model of iPhone (and I do Blackberry). So, there will be two winners this time around. Unfortunately these cases are not part of the new Warhol collaboration series, but they are still pretty styley.

So, if you are an iPhoner who would like to score one of these cases for your iPhone 4, let’s talk about art. In honor of the Warhol collab (and the new statue that just went up in Union Square near his former factory), leave a comment about Andy. It could be the first time you heard of him. It could commentary on his work,or whatever comes to mind. The first time that I ever really paid attention to who Andy Warhol was, I was in Jr. high. It was because of a movie called “Ruben and Ed.” The movie is still one of my favs, btw. In the movie, there was an old trailer in the middle of the desert with “Andy Warhol sucks a big one” painted on it in red spray paint. Ruben thought it was hilarious. So did I.

I will choose a winner at some point next week. Good luck!

I’ve got a cover but I wanted to comment anyway. For the longest time I used to get Andy Warhol and Woody Allen mixed up.
Weird, right? Both true New Yorkers, and both had A and W for initials, but still random….

Um, yeah, I feel uninformed. But artsy isn’t really my thing so I’m using that as an excuse. I’ve heard of his name though, so at least I’ve got that going for me and I can comment on his name: Andy is a pretty sweet name. But, I like it for a girl better than a boy. The end.

Jacob and I love Cinnagrill – which is a little Italian joint downtown – and right behind it is the swimming pool where scenes from Rueben and Ed were filmed. Pretty much every time we go eat there Jacob says “did you know that Rueben and Ed was filmed right there?” And I’m like, “duh – I know, you’ve told me like a hundred times.”

And that has nothing to do with Andy Warhol. But I’d still like to win :)

Did you know that his first movie, Sleep, was 6 hours long? Who has the time, let alone the patience to film someone sleeping for 6 hours?!? That right there my friend, is dedication. Plus, he proposed a restaurant where people would sit in a cubicle with their own TV to watch while they ate. Talk about wanting to be alone while eating. Mmmmm mmmm good! :)

I’m lusting after those cases, which are so much cooler than mine.

My first exposure to a real-life Warhol was at a gallery in Scottsdale about 10 years ago.

Also, an anagram for Andy’s name is “hardly own a” which is fitting.

Uh-HELLO! Andy Warhol.. I first heard of him in high school and his pop art. But, he is strange dude. I read somewhere that he was a very religious homosexual and that he was shot 3 times once by a woman (can’t remember her name) for being too much in control of her life. She even had some club about “cutting men.” Strange to say the least! Any way, my iPhone 4 case just broke after the ump-teenth time of being dropped. Whoops! Love reading about your fam!

I was in grade 10 art class. We were studying slide shows and I had just fallen in love with Jackson Pollack the week before. Andy Warhol seemed to be a wonderful fill for “Art Obsession Of The Week” but I was so busy trying to tune out the hated art teacher that I missed 99% of the information taught. To this day Andy Warhol reminds me of nasty Mr. Gadinskis.

PS it’s Pollock NOT Pollack. That’s what I get for not re-reading before I hit post.

Andy Warhol…very much a free thinker! I can’t remember the first time I heard about him because I live in a small podunk town that has very little things that could be called “art”. Ha! I’d love to win an iPhone 4 case for my phone though! We DO have iPhones in podunksville. :)

@Dakota: Yeah, the stuff is pretty dope for sure. Here is a link some stuff that I shot at the part for Curatedmag.

I always think of Andy’s crazy hair, which starts me thinking about Einstein’s crazy hair and how both are genius. Then I wonder what crazy hairstyle I should rock.

I’d love either one of these! My phone is sad and lonely without one. My five year old likes to “drive” it around the table, so an incase would be very useful!

Halloween 2009. Weever Concert. Matt of Matt & Kim came out dressed as Andy Warhol, did he not?

April 7th, 2011

@Col: Indeed he did. I saw Mat and Kim last fall at a converse event and told them that I liked them better as Andy and Edie. They thought it was pretty funny.

I saw a print in a store when I was like 7 and I read his name as War Hole. I laughed really hard because things that end in hole are super hilarious when your are 7.

I wholeheartedly agree with that quote – Andy Warhol sucks, no matter the size. I like these iPhone cases much, much more than his artwork.

Oh it’s going to get weird now, isn’t it?

I don’t have an iphone 4. I love that movie.

I’ll be honest…not a big fan of the pop art. Not a real collector of art. Just a fan of you and your wife’s blog(b)s.
Have a great weekend…

Andy Warhol sucks the big one is too funny!

I heart all the people who were around Andy Warhol in the Factory days and have quite the collection of books on them! Edie Sedgwick is one of my faves to read about and of course the ever delicious and dirty Joe Dallesandro.
He was more interesting because of the characters he surrounded himself with then his actual self.

I am a total blog stalker of the B’s and Pip but the thing that finally brought me out was Ruben and Ed. “My cat can eat a whole watermelon!” I thought that my quirky high school friend and I were the only people alive who had seen this movie. So awesome and so, so strange. The shoes, the pants, Crispin Glover, the cat…it never ends.
Because I am a stickler for the rules, I will share my earliest Andy memory: my elementary art teacher showed us Campell’s Soup Cans and asked us what we thought about it. I raised my hand and said that I could make it, so it wasn’t really that great. Ha ha! Crazy kid.
I really like the spiffy white case and I think it’s pretty nice of you to do these giveaways.
Peace out.
“Raise your hand, Ed!”

I don’t like or dislike A.W.-I think I just don’t get him…

Andrea

Yeah, for me it was those soup cans too. And the day-glo colors. Repeating images of Marilyn Monroe. Give me the drawings of a four or five year-old any day – much more dynamic and compelling!

Love that green iPhone case – thanks for the chance.

I worked at a PR firm in the city once, and I remember my boss telling us this story about Andy and Campbell’s soup. You know how most company’s are really tight with copyrights and anyone doing anything with their products without their permission? Well, Andy famously used the Campbell’s tomato soup image in his art. But instead of suing him, the marketing manager for Campbell’s sent Andy a letter telling him how much the company admired his work, and they sent him some free tomato soup.

Sweet giveaway. Thanks!

so did I win or what?

April 11th, 2011

@michelle: I still don’t know who won! Hahahah. Hopefully I’ll figure it out tonight. If you come back to this post and the comments are closed, then you know that someone has/is about to win.

“Before I was shot, I always thought that I was more half-there than all-there – I always suspected that I was watching TV instead of living life. People sometimes say that the way things happen in movies is unreal, but actually it’s the way things happen in life that’s unreal. The movies make emotions look so strong and real, whereas when things really do happen to you, it’s like watching television – you don’t feel anything. Right when I was being shot and ever since, I knew that I was watching television. The channels switch, but it’s all television.” -wikipedia

I had to look him up…and I found this. If I were shot, I would probably lean more on the reality of life. Maybe this way of thinking allowed him to create in ways others couldn’t.

The statue reminds me of street art. I wonder if they did that on purpose.

Well…… I can always tell that it’s an Andy Warhol movie that I’m watching because I hate it passionately…

Lost in translation. I meant “painting/picture”.

April 11th, 2011

@Abby: Abby, funny that you should pose your question about the intentions of the tribute artist. There was actually a video interview with the guy today on Gothamist. His name is Rob Pruitt.
