Since Piper has been back at Columbia, I have been back to the old car moving routine. I have not enjoyed it. I normally get up at 6, so that I can get it done before there is any real traffic. The sweet spot is between 6 and 7. After 7, there is a garbage truck and a school bus blocking every single street in our neighborhood.

This morning, Reagan woke me up, while she was stirring around. I had one of those sudden moments of panic, like I knew I shouldn’t still be asleep. I had forgotten to take my phone off of silent, and the type of alarm that I had set for moving the car, doesn’t make any noise, when my phone is on silent. It was already 7. I got down stairs just in time for the blizzard to start, and in time to get stuck behind every school bus and garbage truck in our neighborhood, at least once. Hahahaha. I’m ok with that though, because the snow was very pretty and entertaining to watch, while taking breaks from watching the dudes toss garbage into the truck.

At long last, I did find a parking spot in time to make it down to work w/o being late, where I took the above photos of the storm. I know they are kind of boring. I liked these ones much more.

To add a little bit of contrast to the gray photos above, I thought I would post the image below. It has made its way around the internet by now, but I thought it was cool enough to share again anyway.

crayons_big2

The image comes from artist Steven Worley’s blog. In his post, he outlines the history of Crayola’s color spectrum, and how the palette has expanded over the years, saying:

Crayola’s crayon chronology tracks their standard box, from its humble eight color beginnings in 1903 to the present day’s 120-count lineup.  According to Crayola, of the precious crayons of my childhood – the seventy-two colors from the official 1975 set – sixty-one survive.

So cool.

Shepard Fairey X Levi's Times Square

I have been a huge fan of Shepard Fairey since I first discovered his work. Despite his recent legal battles, which include the City of Boston (for illegal street art), and the Associated Press (being sued for copyright infringement, Re: the image from which is based his “change”/”hope” image), I still think that he is pretty freaking awesome. A lot of street artists feel like Fairey has sort of sold out, with his commercial projects. He did a Saks ad last year (proceeds went to charity). Then there is his Obey line of clothing. Obey is what brought him to Times Square last night. He created a live installation to promote the collaboration that Obey is doing with Levi’s. The installation was right in front of the Levi’s store in Times Square. I was covering the event for SoJones. It was pretty cool hanging out, like that, with one of my long time, idols. I had a really great time shooting it.

Sorry to bomb this post all up with so many photos, but I really liked all of these.

^—There was a pretty solid crowd spectating (like there ever isn’t one, in TS)

^–Even though this thing was probably going straight in the trash, Shep still paid attention to detail.

Below was shot from a cherry picker. I kind of liked this vantage point. I wished that I had brought more lenses.

^–Dash Snow Tribute in SoHo

It is such a nice surprise, when I think that I’m going to be working all weekend, then find out on Friday afternoon, that I’m off the hook. I took full advantage and slept in on Saturday until noon, to catch up on some sleep. Reagan was a good sport, to let me. She wakes up before 7 AM every day by default. Normally, on the weekend, she is jumping on the bed to get me up too, so that she doesn’t get bored.

This afternoon, we took an impromptu trip downtown with our friends the Carter’s which was cool, since we haven’t really been able to kick it with them since, like, last month. Reagan wanted to check out a flea market in SoHo, plus we were meeting up with one of Aubrey’s other friends. So Col and I were just kind of along for the ride. It was cool though. It definitely felt like fall, today. It wasn’t cold, but it is definitely not summer anymore.

^—Reagan and Addie

I had the camera with me. So of course I got some shots of SoHo and Chinatown. Os Gemios are a street art duo from Sao Paulo, who are identical twins (which is actually what Gemios mean in Portuguese). They came to NYC recently and threw up this mural:

It was the first time that I have seen it in person. So that was kind of cool. Like the first shot in the post, the mural is a tribute to Dash Snow, a legend from the neighborhood, who died this summer.

Other noteworthy event= Utah Football chalked up another W. It is probably one of the last games that I will be able to get on TV out here, this season, since conference play starts soon.

If  you read Wired, then you probably already saw this thing. I thought it was so cool that I wanted to share it. The photo is of the “living wall” on the  Athenaeum Hotel in London. This wall is one of the several architectural/gardening hybrid creations by Patrick Blanc. The wall is covered with felt and mesh, in which the plants take root. There is a watering system that keeps the felt hydrated. I’m not sure who to credit this photo with, I just found it on Google images. Wired hasn’t published this article on the web, yet. But the photo that they have is incredible.

Blanc first dabbled with this idea, as a kid, when he suspended some plants on the wall in his bedroom, with the roots running into his aquarium. Aquariums and plants? I feel like I could be friends with this guy.

If  you read Wooster, then you have already seen this. I thought it was extremely cool though. Enough to re-post. The artist is Strøk. Diver at low, and high tide.  [click thumbs for larger images]

First of all, check out this great pink haired lady from PatriX on Flickr. It is from her Berlin set. So I assume that it is somewhere in Berlin. I have no idea who the artist is. Anyway, I really like it.

Second: Tomorrow is All Points West. Reagan and I are pretty pumped about it, and hoping for blue skies. We were pretty bummed that Beastie Boys had to cancel, but pretty stoked that Jay-Z is filling in.

When I was buying our tickets, earlier this week (FYI ticketmaster is the devil), This was the Capcha that I got when I was checking out. What the crap? Hahahaha.

Cargo Trade Show July 21, 2009

I had a blast hanging out with the guys from Rich Yung, Triple 5 Soul, e.5.Charlie, and the Cargo guys, for the past two evenings at the Cargo show. SoJones got me hooked up with press credentials, and the Cargo guys really treated me right. The music was awesome, both yesterday with DJ Camilo, and today with DJ Panther (pictured above). The image below, is one that I shot from the DJ booth, looking down over the event.

The guys below are the ones behind e.5.Charlie. They are a couple of pretty cool characters who hooked me up with a bunch of swag.

You can check out my interviews with Rich Yung, and with Triple 5 Soul, over at SoJones. There are a couple of more interviews I did at the show that we be published on SoJones in the next few days. Here is the article about the history of the show.

cargo

Next Monday and Tuesday evening, I will be covering the Cargo fashion art and music trade show for SoJones. I’m pretty excited about it. So feel free to check out SoJones next week for some hard-hitting photo and literary journalism (the part about “hard-hitting” is tongue in cheek, of course) by yours truly.

Snipers & Pots, by l.e.t.

Yesterday morning I walked past this really hot Keith Hernandez wheatpaste, stuck to a relay box on West Broadway. I really wanted to shoot it, so I brought my good camera today, and everything. Unfortunately, street art doesn’t last long in the FiDi, and it had already been removed by this morning. So, instead, I’m sharing a fresh new wheatpaste from l.e.t. in Dusseldorf.  I didn’t draw this wheatpaste, or shoot this photo. They are both the work of l.e.t. I posted one of his ensebles before, that made its way into Wooster. The guy has some skills.
